I am delighted to announce that Bradford on Avon Town Council passed the Climate Emergency Motion to become carbon-neutral by 2030 at a meeting yesterday evening 5th March 2019.
We appreciate this is an enormous challenge, but it is imperative! We have already taken some actions, including installing solar panels on our main Council building.
There is so much more that can be done and must be done. The Councillors and community are keen to work together to make this a meaningful effort and influence other nearby towns and parishes to support this motion.

Alex this sounds very positive – do you think you will be able to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 without Westminster providing you with further resources and powers?

On Wednesday April 3rd, Newcastle Green party and others will present a circa 3000 signature petition to the city council, triggering a debate. We’re hopeful Lib Dem and Labour councillors will then propose/support a climate emergency motion.

Richmond upon Thames Council is in the process of preparing a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy with policies and targets and will consider a Climate Change Emergency Declaration later in the year in that context and in parallel.

This wasn’t passed. Shame on Worcestershire County Council. Motion passed with amendment to ‘acknowledge’ that parliament has declared an emergency and to set zero carbon omissions date to 2050!!!

Hi Sarah. I saw your petition on NextDoor. I live in Sunningdale and have spent a couple of years working on climate change. I would be interested to help you with a Climate Emergency in Windsor and Maidenhead. Can you please send me more info or call me on to discuss? Thanks

On 15 May, Labour opposition leader Anne Western presented a motion to Derbyshire County Council (Con controlled) to declare a climate emergency, target date 2030. Conservative Leader Cllr Barry Lewis countered with an “amendment” which was their own motion, taking out any reference to an emergency, but including “urgently to review the council carbon reduction strategy, set out a plan and timetable to make Derbyshire carbon neutral, call on UK govt to provide powers and resources…, work with partners…, Report back in 6 months…” Campaigners were “bitterly disappointed”.

Wyre Forest District Council declared a climate Emergency on 22nd. May. This was affirmed in 2 motions.
Motion from Councillor Fran Oborski MBE, Independent, Liberal Democrat and Green Group as amended by the Labour Group

Acknowledging that Global Warming is an international crisis, Wyre Forest Council declares a Climate Emergency. Council further recognises that trees play a major part in reduction of our carbon footprint and are a vital part of our ecosystem. Council therefore resolves to work in partnership with all local schools and with Worcestershire County Council to ensure that, within the life of this 4 year Council term, every child in a Wyre Forest school is able to be involved in planting a tree. Council invites the Cabinet to consider any financial implications arising from this resolution and, if necessary, to bring forward proposals for funding as part of the next medium term financial strategy.

Motion from Councillor Fran Oborski MBE, Independent, Liberal Democrat and Green Group

Council recognises that the climate change emergency requires councils to take positive action and notes that Wyre Forest has been identified as an area with a very low level of provision of charging points for electric vehicles. Council therefore resolves: (1) to ensure that adequate electric vehicle charging points are provided in Council-owned public car parks (2) to encourage the owners of privately-owned car parks to do likewise. (3) to request the Corporate Director: Economic Prosperity and Place to advise Council on how it can require electric vehicle charging points to be provided on all future residential and employment developments where vehicle access is provided. Council invites the Cabinet to consider any financial implications arising from this resolution and, if necessary, to bring forward proposals for funding as part of the next medium term financial strategy.

On Tuesday 4th June I will be raising a Members’ Item at Alsager Town Council asking for the council to publicly declare Climate Emergency, to call on national government to address climate crisis as a matter of the utmost urgency, to welcome grass-roots initiatives around climate crisis, and to ask our borough council (Cheshire East, who declared Climate Emergency last week) to urgently prioritise climate crisis and to empower local initiatives to help combat – but also prepare for – climate change.

While we’re ‘only’ a town council, I feel it’s important that we publicly voice our concern, especially as we’re a community with a recent history of taking the local initiative where we’ve been failed by the borough (we’re the only Cheshire town to have a town-wide Pollinator Action Plan, for example, which I brought to town council when Cheshire East Council refused to act on pollinators).

I’ll be speaking in my role as Animal Welfare Party councillor for Alsager’s West Ward, but I’m really hoping for unanimous agreement on this from colleagues across political parties.

On 15th July, London Borough of Croydon Council will vote on a Climate Emergency declaration. The motion was announced by the leader of the council and we’re hoping that there won’t be too much opposition.
