The National Lottery Community Fund has announced a new £100m fund to tackle the climate emergency.

The grant-maker said its Climate Action Fund would give grants to people and groups for community-led schemes that help to reduce the impact of climate change.

Charities are expected to play a key part in the community partnerships that develop the type of schemes that will receive money through the fund, which is expected to open for applications in the autumn.

The NLCF said the type of activities funded will differ from place to place, but themes might include sustainable energy and transport, food, and protecting and regenerating spaces and habitats.

The funder said it had already invested in some schemes of this nature, including a flushable eco-friendly toilet wipe that disperses in water in three hours.

Dawn Austwick, chief executive of the NLCF, said: “Everyone can play their part in addressing climate change. The impact will be all the greater if we come together within and across communities.

“This is why we are launching the Climate Action Fund to create grass-roots momentum built on learning and sharing within, between and beyond communities, in order to achieve meaningful and sustained climate action.”

Information on the application process, funding limits and deadlines is expected to be available later this year.
