Independent analysis of the UK’s first rural, social housing Passivhaus scheme shows the homes are still highly energy efficient and delivering heating bills as low as £30 per quarter.
A performance review of Hastoe Housing Association’s Passivhaus development in Wimbish, Essex, reveals “no deterioration” has been identified and gas consumption remains “very low” – over six years after the scheme was first opened in 2011. It also confirms high levels of resident comfort throughout the properties.
Passivhaus is highly energy-efficient method of building, promoted by the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt, Germany. The technique, based on exceptional air-tightness and mechanical ventilation, can cut heating bills to a fraction of the current UK average. The report, written by Martin Ingham at Linktreat Ltd, assesses whether the Wimbish homes are continuing to perform to this high standard.
The Wimbish development is occupied by residents with little prior interest in energy efficiency – showing how the Passivhaus model consistently reduces heating bills for a broad range of residents.
