We understand that councils can be held back from taking climate action by a lack of resources, staff not having the necessary skills and, often, a lack of political will. We recognise, too, that the lack of guidance and finance from national government is challenging. Our courses will demonstrate how it can be possible for councils to take meaningful action despite these barriers and we will be providing information, tools and support to make this happen.

Climate Emergency UK have created the Council Climate Action Scorecards which assess every UK council on its environmental performance. The Scorecards will be used in the Academy’s courses to understand current council climate action. The courses will also include opportunities for councils and communities to learn from each other. Local Climate Academy courses will examine different aspects of a council’s operations and activity including Buildings and Heating, Transport, Planning, Biodiversity, Collaboration and Engagement, Governance and Finance and Waste Reduction and Food.

The Local Climate Academy will be run online and will include talks from leading experts sharing their knowledge and experience from across the sector. Previous speakers at Climate Emergency UK events include representatives from the Climate Change Committee, Scottish Improvement Service and Centre for Alternative Technology.

Our courses will also include opportunities for peer-learning and to learn from the barriers and solutions that have been found along the journeys of different councils. We will be exploring difficulties and good practice found across different types of councils in Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland.

The Local Climate Academy is offering two courses to help you help your council to take climate action: The LCA Full Course and the LCA Short Course.

Climate Emergency UK is a small not-for-profit organisation which relies on grants and donations to run. The Council Climate Scorecards are free resources, published online and accessible to all. However, it costs over £100,000 to create the council Climate Action Scorecards. We know times are tough, especially in Local Government, but without charging for bespoke training we are unable to continue to create the Scorecards.
