On 17 July 2019, Colchester Borough Council declared a climate emergency, acknowledging that urgent action is required to limit the environmental impacts produced by the climate crisis. As part of this declaration, the Council resolved several actions that it is taking to respond to the climate crisis. One of the main actions was the formation of the Conservation and Environmental Sustainability Task and Finish Group, which have held meetings to discuss actions the Council can take on the climate emergency.

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, the Council has produced a Climate Emergency Action Plan. This document specifies the Council’s greenhouse gas emissions and the actions it plans to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.
